Removal of the MarketScore Software or Spyware

MarketScore is an internet usage monitoring program.

There are two variants, OS Relevant Knowledge, and NS MarketScore.

What it does:

  • The software can silently download and install arbitrary unsigned code from its controlling server, as a self-update feature.
  • It can install its own trusted root certificates so it can intercept secure (SSL) connections made by your machine. These certificates are left behind even when the software is uninstalled, allowing MarketScore servers to impersonate any other domain.

Every web connection goes through a remote proxy server where everything you send and fetch (including 'secure' HTTPS connections such as online banking) is stored and analysed. Because it works as a proxy itself, it won't connect properly through other external proxies.

Process to remove the software:

1. Delete the MarketScore executable file. To do this open up a search window (Start -> Search -> For Files or Folders)

2. Enter mksc.exe into the file name box. This will find the executable file that MarketScore uses to launch the Software as shown below.

3. Right-click on the mksc.exe file that the search finds and select rename. Rename the file to mksc.exeold. Keep this search window open.

4. Right-click on the task bar at the bottom of the screen and select Task Manager from the menu.

5. Select the Process tab within Task Manager and highlight the mksc.exe process. With this highlighted click on the End Process button and select Yes on the dialog box that opens up.

6. Go back to the Search window that was previously opened and deleted the mksc.exeold file.

7. Also delete the MKSC.EXE-03EA10D8.pf file that was discovered in the search.

8. Look through all certificates to see if either 'Netsetter' or 'Marketscore'. Certificates have been downloaded onto the PC. To do this launch Internet Explorer.

9. From the Tools menu, choose Internet Options.

10. Choose the Content tab. Look through all certificates in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab (see pic below).

11. Delete the Netsetter & Marketscore Inc certificates.

12. Reboot the PC once the above changes have been made. Log the PC on, connect to the internet and ensure that your Online Banking Site can be accessed.

The Bank cannot guarantee that all the Spyware software will be removed or disabled even if these instructions are carried out successfully. We recommend that all computer users seek professional security advice from either their computer provider or Internet Service Provider.
