More informationThis advice is intended to raise the awareness of an increasingly common Internet fraud called "phishing". Phishing involves sending customers a seemingly legitimate email request for account and other information, often under the guise of asking the customer to verify or reconfirm confidential personal information such as account numbers, passwords and other sensitive information. In the email, the perpetrator uses various means to convince recipients that they are receiving a legitimate message from someone whom the customer may already be doing business with, such as a bank.
These emails usually contain copies of bank logos, web links and graphics designed to mislead the customer and prompt them to complete an embedded form or return the email with the information contained within or to simply visit the web site by using the hyperlink provided in the email. The email and web sites are fake.
